Grind the tiles first.
When you’re putting epoxy over existing tiles, proper preparation is one of the most important steps.
The goal is to remove the glaze, dirt and contaminants and mechanically profile the surface so the epoxy has something to properly grip.
A shiny, untouched tile surface might look perfectly clean but that doesn’t mean it’s ready for epoxy.
It’s what happens before the coating goes down that can make all the difference.

Before you epoxy over tiles, check what’s happening underneath.
Are any of the tiles loose? Can you move them?
What about the grout?, is it solid, or is it loose, cracked or missing?
These can all be signs that something needs attention before the epoxy goes down.
Any loose tiles or damaged grout should be repaired and made sound and solid first. Sometimes that may mean replacing a tile or getting a tiler to repair the affected areas.
It doesn’t need to look perfect underneath, it needs to be stable and properly prepared.
Do the prep properly now, and you’ll have much more confidence in the finished coating later.

Cracked tiles? Don’t epoxy over them just yet.
A tiled surface can look perfectly fine at first glance, but cracked tiles can be an important warning sign.
Cracks may indicate movement underneath the tile, and if that movement continues after the epoxy is installed, it can transfer into the coating and potentially cause cracking.
