Hi, Tim McGary from Epoxy Flooring Co. Today, I want to answer the question: Will my epoxy floor turn yellow?
The answer is yes and no. If you leave a plain epoxy floor exposed to sunlight, it will turn yellow.
So here’s an example of just a plain grey epoxy floor. Here’s an example of a partial flake epoxy floor.
And if they get exposed to sunlight, here’s what they will look like. So you can see down the bottom of the screen there, it has turned a yellowy amber colour. And that will happen to every epoxy floor if it is exposed to sunlight.
So the question is, how do you prevent that? It’s quite easy.
In garages, on patios, industrial sheds, for example, we put down the plain grey epoxy floor and then cover it with vinyl flakes because the vinyl flakes are UV stable and they will not turn yellow.
That is what is known as a full-flake seamless epoxy floor, and it looks like this.
You can see there up close, all of those different colors are actually individual flakes that will not turn yellow when the sun hits them.
The other way to protect the floor and prevent it from going yellow is to apply a clear top coat.
If you apply a clear top coat of polyaspartic, polyurea, or polyurethane, it will prevent the epoxy underneath it from going yellow when it’s exposed to light.
You just need to make sure whatever top coat that goes on is UV stable. That is the way to make sure that your epoxy floor will not turn yellow.
